NRF Prepares You for Holiday Crowds

The holidays are upon us, and with them come the joys and challenges of holiday crowds. While you prepare for the Black Friday or Boxing Day rush, the National Retail Federation has updated its crowd management guidelines for the holiday season.

The guidelines cover best practices for both mall management and retailers. Even if you’re not expecting any major holiday sales, it’s worth a look: the guide also looks at other events that have the potential to get out of hand, like product launches and celebrity appearances. And it’s always best to be prepared.

The guidelines outline the essentials of any crowd management or emergency plan, including the following:

• Promotional/holiday sales and special events
• Sales and events versus emergency management crowd controls
• Mall-based retailers versus non mall-based retailers
• Crowd management guidelines, references and contingency plans.

Take a look at the 2010 guidelines here, and the NRF’s Promotional Sales and Special Events Checklist here.
