Wine and Food Bring in Funds at Willowbrook

As we all know, the holidays are a good time to give. People are filled with a sense of empathy, and have an easier time giving without expectation of getting anything (other than, perhaps, a tax credit) in return.

The holidays are also an excellent time to indulge.

Give someone a chance to give and indulge themselves and you have the perfect storm of holiday charity events. Take, for example, Willowbrook Shopping Centre’s Celebration of Wine and Food earlier this month.

Now in its 23rd year, the wine tasting festival is organized by the Rotary Club of Langley Central. It supported a number of local community projects and charities, primarily the Family Maternity Centre expansion project at the Langley Memorial Hospital.

According to the Langley Advance, this year’s event saw a 20 per cent jump in ticket sales from last year, brining over 1000 people in to the shopping center and out of the cold. The total raised was over $50,000.

It’s not hard to see why the event is so popular. Run by dozens of volunteers, it brings in food from seven of the city’s finest restaurants, hot and cold hors d’ouvres and an impressive wine list featuring over 160 wines from around the world. It’s the real deal.

Planning is already underway for next year’s event, which will find itself back at the shopping center once again.
