TOMS Goes Barefoot for the Cause


TOMS is well-known for its generosity. As a standing policy, each time someone buys a pair of TOMS shoes, the company gives a second pair to a child in need.

So when the company set out to create a day of awareness, it was certain to be a worthy day. And it certainly was: on April 5th, over one thousand events were held worldwide to celebrate One Day Without Shoes.

People around the world took the day to go barefoot, and to send a message with their bare feet. That message was simple – this barefoot state might seem out of the ordinary here, but all over the world there are children who go without shoes, who badly need them for their health and safety.

TOMS put together a mobile app for the event that let participants easily inform others of the reasons for their bare foot statement. It also put together a contest, the Barefoot Challenge. Groups of 150 or more could register in the challenge for the chance at an impressive grand prize: a speaking engagement from TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie, and ten employees or members chosen at random to join a TOMS shoe distribution in a nearby community. Talk about a prize that’s just perfect for the cause.
