The Mall, Wood Green Gets Green Art

502wgThe Mall, Wood Green has been holding its EnviroMall campaign. As part of it, shoppers have been involved in the life cycle of a new piece of art.

The center commissioned London artist Michelle Reader to create a unique sculpture for display. Reader works with recycled materials to build striking life-size creations—so-called “junk sculptures” of families and individuals, animals and more. Some make use of working parts of old mechanical toys, clocks and other objects to create moving parts.

For her piece for the center, Reader used waste materials that could be found in the center: cardboard, hangers, and other discarded items.

Last week, Reader spent the day at the center. She created her sculpture live at the mall so shoppers could watch on. Now that it’s made, shoppers have another chance to get involved. The center is looking for a name for the recycled gentleman. Shoppers who put a name in for selection have a chance to win an Annual Member Pass for the Tate Gallery, with unlimited entry to exhibitions, access to the museum’s Members Rooms, subscription to its magazine and more.

As another part of the EnviroMall campaign, the center is collecting plastic bags to exchange them for free reusable bags. Shoppers that participate and collect a voucher from the center’s Facebook page can enter to win a bag of their choice from JD Sports.
