Take a Look at Chaplefield Shopping Center’s Custody & Community Program

Chapelfield Shopping Center’s Custody & Community Project has just been recognized for Business in the Community‚Äôs (BITC) National Big Tick award. It’s more than deserving.

The project helps to build a better future for the Norfolk community and the serving and former prisoners that live in the area. It was launched in 2009 to take a proactive approach to addressing crime.

It gives serving prisoners the chance to take on practical, real life work with training opportunities. It also helps offenders find permanent positions after release, something that is increasingly rare. Over the course of the program to date, 45 servicing prisoners from Norwich Prison have completed it, and 80 percent of them have secured permanent positions as a result. Throughout the U.K., under 26 percent of prisoners leave prison with a job.

This is an impressive model, and hopefully other businesses in the area will follow the center’s lead. Not only has it had a positive impact for the people who’ve benefited directly from the project, it helps the whole community
