Swan Centre Goes Eco-Educational
Last month, visitors to the Swan Centre learned how to reduce their carbon footprints with help from some fun and educational activities.
With the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month just ahead of them, The Mayor and Mayoress of Eastleigh joined shoppers and helped launch a new Bra Recycling Initiative at Bonmarche. The retailer has teamed up with the charity ‘Against Breast Cancer’ to encourage women to give their support to their new Bra Recycling Campaign.
Julie Goodman, Manager of Bonmarche said “We were very keen to introduce Bra Recycling to the Swan Centre. It is good on so many levels – it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill, helps women in Africa, where affordable bras are not always available and for every ton of bras that we collect £1,000 goes to charity ‘Against Breast Cancer.”
Shoppers young and old explored a treasure trail around the center that showed off just how much can be recycled when shopping. Everyone taking part receiving a set of twig pencil crayons for their trouble. They could also visit Tin Can Alley where they could knock down cans featuring energy hogging items. The shoppers who could take out the biggest energy guzzlers each hour were well-rewarded with prizes from the Eastleigh Transition Network.
Shoppers also got to enjoy free samples of local produce, learn about options for saving energy in their community from service providers, plant seeds for veggies and share their eco art.
“We think it is important to encourage children to get into good habits when it comes to managing waste, so we encouraged families to go on a treasure trail which allowed us to highlight the convenience of recycling waste here at the Centre, through the facilities offered by our retailer,” said Swan Centre Manager Dee Buffone. “We are continuing to look for ways to reduce waste.”
