Shopping Centers Earn Green Certifications
Two great pieces of green news out of shopping centres this week:
Villa Mall in Tshwane, South Africa, has received the first Green Star SA – Retail Centre Design version 1 rating. The rating tool was launched in 2009 by Green Building Council of South Africa. The project has made a large commitment to environmental efficiency, including a green lease for tenants, energy efficient lighting and refrigeration, and water recapture and recycling. It also boasts a major solar array.
To the North, The Meads shopping center is one of the first British shopping centers to claim the ISO 14001 environment certificate. To maintain its certificate, the shopping center will be subject to monthly checks to ensure the center and its retailers continue to source their goods from local suppliers or ISO 14001 suppliers.
