Park Royal Features Half The Sky

509halfMother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to show the most important women in our lives how beloved they are. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate women around the world: and not just celebrate them—make a difference.

Park Royal Shopping Centre will spend this Saturday, the day before Mother’s Day, joining with a group of women who want to change the world. Once they were members of a West Vancouver book club, and now they are Half the Sky Canada, an organization dedicated to helping women around the world. They were inspired by the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a book that has become a film and a movement.

Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn took inspiration from the Chinese proverb “Women hold up half the sky,” and in turn inspired people around the world. Half the Sky Day at Park Royal is part of that.

18 non-governmental organizations and charities that work with women and girls will have booths at the event, so that they can provide the opportunity for the community to learn of the work they’re doing internationally and locally, and to give others the opportunity to get involved. National football players will be joining in as well, meeting with shoppers that visit the Emerging from Violent Abuse (EVA) booth.

There will also be a raffle with gifts and prizes from local merchants and a kids craft centre for youngsters to prepare gifts for their mothers.
