Malls Pull Together After Typhoon Haiyan
Following super typhoon Haiyan, shopping centers around the world are doing what they can to help. As Shopping Centers Today reports, that help is coming in many forms. Money, food, goods and community support are high on the list to assist devastated areas of the Philippines.
Landlords of properties in the Philippines are, of course, most actively involved. SCT has more:
SM Foundation is taking the lead in the relief effort with the nationwide reach of SM Cares of the mall group, SM Savemore, and BDO Foundation. Each group has a different expertise in the community support program, and will be working with community groups to expand the efforts and widen the reach of the relief operation,” the company said in a prepared statement. “Operation Tulong Express” will be open for donations in SM malls, and an account in both BDO and China Bank will be open to accept cash donations.”
The Philippines’ other major retail landlord, Ayala Land, is also swinging into action. Donations are being accepted at its malls. “You will see a lot of events, like concerts, become a venue for fundraising,” said Ayala Land President and CEO Antonio Aquino. “The concierge booth will have donation boxes and proceeds of shopping bags will go to rehabilitation projects and help victims.”
American malls are also helping to direct shoppers’ donations to the right organizations.
