LynnMall Starts Kids on a Life-Long Love of Cooking

Looking for a good way to help kids pass the time over the next holiday break? LynnMall Shopping Centre in New Zealand helped kids have fun, get healthy and learn some new skills, all while raising money for a great cause.

Kids Cook at LynnMall taught hundreds of young chefs cooking basics, while helping them discover healthy eating habits. For a $5 donation, parents could enroll their children (five and up) in the program. The children learned to cook several simple recipes in their Playmobil kitchens, and picked up skills that will hopefully lead to a lifetime love of cooking. It’s a skill that’s best to pick up young, and a love of cooking almost always leads to healthier eating, so this is a class that might stay with the participants.

The children also took home gift bags of healthy goodies, aprons and a chef’s hats. And three lucky kids won draws for $500 gift certificates. Families could also enter their favorite home-cooked recipe on the campaign’s website for a shot at a $100 gift certificate, with the top two fighting it out in a cook-off this past weekend. A grand prize of $1,000 in gift vouchers was awarded to Team Madison, who impressed the judges with their Pesto Stuffed Chicken Wrapped in Bacon.

Best of all, the proceeds from the event benefited Foundation for Youth Development, an organization that helps young people develop the skills and confidence they need to build a successful life. LynnMall raised over $4300 for the group over the two weeks of the campaign.
