intu Lakeside’s Autism-Friendly Films

627popcornIf you’re a regular reader of Shopping Center Weekly, you probably know of programs like Caring Santa that give children with special needs the chance to enjoy the holidays just as much as anyone else. This summer, intu Lakeside’s Vue Cinema has plans that will bring a similar philosophy to a night at the movie theater.

On the last Sunday of every month, the cinema will hold Autism Friendly Film showings. With a few subtle alterations made to the cinema experience, these showings will allow cinema-goers to enjoy screenings with friends and family in inclusive surroundings.

Those changes are far from outrageous, but they may make a massive difference for those that benefit. Ads will be eliminated, lighting will be left on (but low), and the sound will be turned down to a less overwhelming level.

“At Vue Cinemas we are dedicated to providing all our customers with the best cinematic experience possible,’ said Iain Hutchinson, general manager at Vue Thurrock. “We are delighted to be bringing autism friendly screenings to our customers as it will mean those who were previously unable to attend can now witness films on the big screen, receiving the ultimate viewing experience specifically tailored to their needs.”

Vue Cinemas’ participation in the program brings 78 new screens in total. That nearly doubles the number of screenings available to people in the UK through the Autism Friendly Films project, organized by Dimensions.
