Hunger Games Mall Tour Fights Real Hunger
In all the fuss about The Hunger Games and its cast of teen idols, it’s easy to forget the series is about a dystopian future where communities win food and resources they desperately need only through participation in blood sport rituals. It’s dark stuff, making it just about the ideal vehicle for promoting the fight against hunger in our own society.
As such, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is working closely with Feeding America and the World Food Programme to fight against hunger.
Take a look at HungerGames.com. Where you might expect a full-steam ahead promotional push for the upcoming film, you’ll instead find an all-out campaign to end world hunger. Visitors can explore and share hunger facts like “1 in 5 kids struggles with hunger—4 in 5 can help.” They can also enter to win replica outfits from the film, signed promo material and more.
Similarly, Feeding America is on the road with cast members as during the film’s promotional mall tour. The Philadelphia Inquirer has more:
Other fans bought shirts – and socks, mugs, pillowcases, blankets, and bookmarks – at the mall event. Proceeds from sales of one of the shirts support two charities that fight hunger in the real world, and a Feeding America representative at the event encouraged the teenagers to tweet statistics about hunger that might motivate others to contribute to the cause.
