Going Green Pays Dividends
Early this year, we told you about Regency Centers’ trial program for ‘smart’ irrigation controls. It launched the program at 36 of its shopping centers, hoping to save over 42 million gallons of water a year.
It looks like the trial has been a resounding success. The high-efficiency irrigation controllers will be installed at 54 more shopping centers across the US by the end of the year. The current locations have seen a 30% savings in water usage, which translates to a very nice discount on the water bill. And while being green is immeasurably important, in this climate everyone can afford to save a few bucks.
With the new centers being folded into the program, Regency hopes to save 96 million gallons of water next year. The company will continue to add centers to the program, focusing first on those with high water consumption, high water costs or utility rebate programs. The best part of all? The technology will pay for itself in one to three years, depending on the center. Now that’s a smart way to save.
