Earth Day

0409earth.gifNow that Earth Hour has passed, it’s time to celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

Several Canadian malls are doing just that, with some fun and original ideas. Westshore Town Centre is tapping into a new trend with a discussions and workshops on local agriculture and growing your own food. The City of Colwood will also be giving away 100 organic tomato plants to shoppers willing to commit to its Go Local Tomato Challenge.

Sunridge Mall is holding a contest for artistically-inclined local students. The eco-sculpture contest invites local students to create sculptures out of recycled materials. The 11 finalists are being voted on by shoppers, and the winning student will receive a $5000 grant to beautify his or her school.

Metropolis at Metrotown is showing off local artists and designers who create recycled goods. Shoppers will also be treated to a number of workshops that will teach them to recycle and reuse old fashions and household items. From turning old plastic bags into a sturdy new tote to using last year’s jeans to make a fashionable new backpack, the workshops have lots to teach crafty shoppers.
