Cockburn Gateway gets Hands On with Wetlands
Over the next 10 months, Cockburn Gateway Shopping City is partnering with the City of Cockburn to launch its Hands on Wetlands project.
It’s a community initiative to bring people together to care for and understand the local wetlands. Less than 20% of the original wetlands remain on the Swan Coastal Plain, and what’s left needs both help and community awareness.
On November 25th, over 100 school children came together to help launch the event in the first of four Hands on Days. They worked onsite at Yangebup Lake to weed, clear and mulch the wetlands. They were provided with safety equipment, sun hats and lunch, and at the end of it were given a Certificate of Appreciation to remind them of the difference they’d made.
The shopping center expects over 500 people to get hands on with the wetlands over the course of the initiative, and hopes to educate many more.
