Beacon Bay Shoppers Run for Warmth
This year for Mandela Day, Beacon Bay Retail Park helped shoppers beat away their winter blues – and helped hundreds of underprivileged families at the same time.
Beacon Bay took full advantage of its outdoor atmosphere in hosting a 5k Breakfast Run earlier this month. To get folks up and out of bed early, the first 200 entrants were given branded tees. By the time registration was complete, over 700 participants were lined up in the early morning cold.
The first 100 to cross the finish line were given goodie bags, but the center had fun giveaways for the rest as well.
While participants were urged to dress for the chilly morning weather, they were also asked to reflect on those who lacked the means to protect themselves from the winter cold. The proceeds from the run went toward purchasing blankets, over 500 of which were distributed at an informal settlement a short distance from the center.
“The hand over is always the best part, when you experience the tears and joys of those receiving the gift of a warm blanket it encourages you to do more. The Breakfast run will certainly be a feature on our annual events calendar and we thank all our sponsors and participants for making it possible” Natelie Kriel, Marketing Manager for Beacon Bay Retail Park.
