Agana Shopping Center Helps the Homeless

425aganaLast weekend, Guam’s Agana Shopping Center welcomed in people rarely welcomed by shopping centers: homeless individuals and families.

Together with the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority (GHURA) and the Guam Homeless Coalition (GHC), the center held the 6th Annual Passport to Services event. The outreach event brings a host of basic services and resources under one roof to help those in need get the assistance they can offer.

More than 250 participants attended, receiving just about everything that can be offered in a day. In addition to discovering the organizations that could help them, participants had the chance to receive health care education, employment and job training, civil legal services, counselling, mental health assessment, housing information and Veterans Affairs assistance.

Alongside those services were some of immediate concern: free immunizations, dental checkups and haircuts. Then lunch, provided by the center’s dining establishments, and “goody bags” containing donated items such as food, clothing, shoes and hygiene products.
