Organic Waste Disposal Company Courts Mall Operators at ICSC Canadian Convention

scw_post_orca_19sept13North America produces 106 billion pounds of organic waste every year, and one company believes that it can help make a great portion of it nearly disappear. Totally Green was at the ICSC Canadian Convention in Toronto earlier this week to approach shopping center operators with an idea: to swap their current waste management programs for The Orca, a processor that uses the micro-organisms contained in bio chips to convert organic waste into earth-friendly water within 24 hours. The compounded value in that proposition would come from savings on disposal costs, increased operational efficiency, a healthier and safer environment for mall F&B tenants and maintenance crews, and ultimately a smaller carbon footprint.

Totally Green provides the Orca units, which malls can lease. The food court tenants and restaurant employees collect their organic waste in bins and place them on racks for mall maintenance staff to grab and empty in The Orca. The resulting water goes back to the regular sewage system and eliminates the need to further handle, store and transport the waste.

The company couldn’t have picked a better spot to promote its sustainable solution: the Metro Toronto Convention Center (MTCC), where the ICSC event as held, is an Orca user. Totally Green also got a chance to amplify its pitch when its sales director, Sean Larmand, led one of the operations roundtable sessions on the last day of the convention. According to account executive Vinesh Lala, there would likely be some fervent supporters among the audience since the company already dealt with six Ontario properties: the Toronto Eaton Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, the Shops at Don Mills, Markville Mall, Dufferin Mall and Coverdale Mall—there are also installations at Toronto’s Rogers Arena and the Shangri-La Hotel.

If The Orca sounds to you more like a waste-gobbling sci-fi creature than a mall tenant amenity, you might want to check out this promotional video:
