Fun for All, and Great for Some

0625heels.gifCause Marketing: Cause Marketing is the art of combining your commercial brand with a non-profit issue. Cause marketing campaigns have years of history and range from relatively superficial tactical partnerships, to long-term, strategic alliances that penetrate deeply into business and nonprofit organizations.
This weekend, Pacific Centre found a fun sponsorship opportunity for a great cause.

BC Children’s Hospital held its “Chip’s Not Dead Yet” Memorial Mile event. The charity run is particularly fun thanks to a number of themed waves, like a bridal dash, a pooch parade, a superhero-costume run, and an underwear dash. Local businesses sponsor prizes for the winners, and Pacific Centre snagged a good one: the High Heel Dash. The organizers are planning on making 2010 the year Canada beats Australia for the high-heel-dash world record, but this year was a great practice run. Pacific Centre put up a $1500 Cadillac Fairview gift card for the winner, and surprisingly we haven’t heard any reports of broken ankles, so it sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon.

Quick Tips: Bicycle Ride

Here’s a quick idea for some summer fun.

Eastgate Shopping Centre is sponsoring a cool community initiative. Starting July 1st, and through September, locals and visitors will be able to rent bicycles from a community centre for £2 thanks in part to the UK shopping center. They’ll also be offering guided family bike tours. Promoting both green travel and healthy lifestyles sounds pretty good to us – now the only question is whether they took advantage of the obvious sponsorship and branding opportunities too.

How to Engage Teens

0625teenboard.gifHave you heard about the Quaker Bridge Mall Insiders?

Taking things a step beyond the usual loyalty programs, Quaker Bridge Mall is actively engaging teens in its workings and initiatives. Teens 13 – 18 can sign up for the program to become Insiders. Twenty to thirty are selected from the applicants. The Insiders program gives them many behind-the-scenes opportunities, like taking part in the mall’s fashion shows, working as volunteers for community projects, and participating in mall events. Currently, the Insiders are organizing a community food drive that they’ll also be running this weekend.

This seems like a fantastic way to get teens engaged in your mall, and we’d love to see more programs like it.

A Hot Summer for Shopping in the UAE

0625dss.gifAn assortment of summer shopping festivals are in full swing in the UAE, and so far it looks like another successful year.

The Mall of the Emirates drew over 100,000 visitors for the opening ceremonies of Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), which is taking place at malls and other tourism locations across Dubai this summer. The opening ceremonies were the biggest and longest yet, DSS has grown from 600,000 visitors at its inception in 1998 to its inception to over 2 million visitors a year in recent years. Malls are hosting entertainment troupes from around the world, with jugglers, illusionists and carnivals keeping the atmosphere upbeat.

Meanwhile Al Ain has launched its first summer shopping festival, hoping to set itself apart as a shopping destination. As part of it, Bawadi Mall is holding “Round the World in 80 days” to celebrate. Over the next couple months, the mall will be bringing in troupes from 11 countries around the world to entertain visitors. There’s also a 10,000 sq ft. Family Entertainment Center with a roller coaster, ski village and more.
